How did Indian B-schools fare in the 2020 FT Global MBA rankings?

Financial Times is a world-renowned organization. Every year it comes up with the Global MBA rankings of business schools around the globe. These rankings hold a lot of value. MBA aspirants often consider the rankings to determine the best college for them. Multiple aspects are considered for ranking business schools.

As you can see, the above aspects make a comprehensive list of things that are vital for an enriching learning environment, especially for a rigorous course like MBA. Each business school is evaluated against each of the above parameters and colleges are ranked according to their total score.

Despite of being a home for some of the brightest brains in the world and some of the most significant educational institutions, Indian business schools often fail to spark in the FT global MBA rankings. However, by each passing year, Indian b-schools are faring well than the previous year.

Let us look at the Indian b-schools which made it to the top 100 FT global MBA rankings.

Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore

  • 2020 Rank: 27
  • 2019 Rank: 33

IIM Bangalore is a popular name in the country, and this time it made its place in the top 30 Global MBA rankings. It jumped up six ranks to secure the 27th spot on the global rankings. It has a weighted USD 183,703 average salary of the alumni. Though it should progress in most of the aspects from the previous year, it suffered a few points decline in a few diversity aspects. Female faculty, women on board, international board and international mobility ranking had a downtrend from the previous year.

Indian School of Business

  • 2020 Rank: 28
  • 2019 Rank: 24

ISB’s FT global ranking has dropped by four points. However, it’s last three years’ average ranking was 27, which means the b-school has been stable with its rank from the past few years. The parameters where ISB didn’t do well this year are female faculty, women on board, international students, international mobility ranking, international course experience ranking, faculty with doctorates, and CSR ranks

Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta

  • 2020 Rank: 42
  • 2019 Rank: 49

IIM Calcutta has climbed up a few stairs in the ranking ladder and stood at 42 when compared against last year’s 49. Though it showed a green trend in most of the aspects, there were a few red marks along the line. Some of the areas of improvement for IIM Calcutta this year are salary percentage increase, value for money rank, international course experience rank, and CSR rank

Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad

  • 2020 Rank: 61
  • 2019 Rank: 47

IIM Ahmedabad has suffered in a big way in these rankings. The reputed business school has dropped its ranking by 14 ranks. A few of the significant contributors that weighed it down are percentage increase, value for money rank, career progress rank, aims achieved, careers service rank, International mobility rank, international course experience rank, and CSR rank.

So, only 4 Indian business schools have featured in the top 100 FT global MBA rankings. However, a couple of them made effective progress. You would notice that most of our business schools are lacking in similar aspects. Hence, more focus needs to be given in those areas. Let us hope more business schools will have a place in the top 100 from next year.
